Hobbyist and Simulator Applications for i-glasses HMDs

Heli-Chair: The Heli-Chair is an innovative device which contains all of the controls neeeded to operate a remote helicopter. The user is seated on the ground in the Heli-Chair and controls the remote helicopter using the controls on the chair. While wearing an i-glasses Video HMD, the operator may view or videotape live video from the camera mounted on the helicopter.

These Duke University students used an i-glasses HMD to view video from a camera mounted on a remote controlled car. With gear purchased from our company (i-glasses, motion tracker and camcorder attachment), the intention of their design project was to create a remotely guided vehicle that, by movements of the head only, controls the vehicle's direction and speed. Virtual Hang Gliding Over Rio de Janiero, Brazil: In this "virtual tour" anyone can experience what a real hang gliding flight feels like - soaring above Rio de Janeiro's scenic geography including Corcovado and Sugarloaf. In addition to the audio/visual experience, the simulator even has a wind effect.

Presented at several international trade shows including SIGGRAPH (Special Interest Group in Graphics) '04 and '05, this simulator was created using cluster technology, combining a hang gliding model, a projection system and an i-glasses PC/SVGA HMD with an Intertrax 2 Tracking System. In the structure, the user rests on a hang strap while viewing video through the i-glasses. Usually hang gliders are controlled by the pilot's shifting weight with respect to the glider.
